Today is October 3rd or how I’ll be referring to it, #BlueShirtDay2016. What is #BlueShirtDay2016? It’s a day for wearing your blue shirt in honor of helping to “Stomp Out Bullying”!
When it comes to bullying most of us have some form of experience with what the word, “bullying” refers to. Perhaps you were bullied or maybe you were behind the bullying. Chances are at one time or another you were on both sides of the coin. Either way bullying affects the majority of people at some time in their lives.
So how do we take a step in the right direction to “stomping out bullying”? Honestly, I wish I had the solution, but I don’t. What I do know is that doing nothing isn’t the answer. That’s why participating in #BlueShirtDay2016 is a start. So for today let’s see how “blue” we can turn the world.
TIPS FOR STOMPING OUT BULLYING
- Teach a child confidence: Bullying can often start when a person feels inadequate or jealous of another. Teaching a child to have confidence can help with both sides of bullying. When a child/person is confident they don’t feel the need to put down others. A confident child/person will also be able to stand up for themselves when they are the ones being bullied.
- Teach kindness and a spirit of doing for others: When I was growing up my parents taught me the importance of doing for others. It could be something as simple as holding a door open for the person behind me to bringing food to a homeless man/woman on the street corner. Regardless the look of joy it brought to that persons face meant the world. It didn’t take long to realize that it felt so much better to give joy to someone vs. taking it away.
- Empower your children and equip them for success: Let’s face it, bullying isn’t something that will disappear today or tomorrow. Though what a wonderful world that would be! So until that day comes give your children the tools they need to overcome the battles they may face. We can’t change what others do to us, but we can change how we react and handle the situation. Give them the knowledge that sharing with someone what is happening to them is okay and acceptable. Teach them that standing up for themselves doesn’t make them a bully, it makes them strong when done in the right way. And most of all, empower them by giving them love each and every day. Kindness and love are contagious, so spread it around as often as you can.
Today is #BlueShirtDay2016, but everyday can be a day for making change. Never give up fighting for the good in the world. Who knows, one day you may just be the ONE to make the difference!
