Anytime Disney brings something to the big screen, we expect something magical, right? Well one would think so, however when I recently went to see Alice Through the Looking Glass, I wasn’t as enveloped by the magic as I had hoped to be.
In all fairness I have never been much of a Tim Burton fan and while he didn’t direct this Alice in Wonderland sequel, I still felt his presence in the characters. I know, I know, I am most likely in the minority. Unfortunately, his characters have always seemed a little odd to me. I say to each their own, but he just doesn’t do it for me personally. In defense of Tim Burton I never had the opportunity to see Alice in Wonderland and I have read that it was quite amazing!
I do have to give credit where credit is due. The characters costumes and makeup are unbelievable. Had I not known that Johnny Depp was the Mad Hatter, I would never have guessed it. All in all however, I couldn’t get past the story line and found myself wanting something more.
Alice Kingsleigh (Wasikowska) has spent the past few years following in her father’s footsteps and sailing the high seas. Upon her return to London, she comes across a magical looking glass and returns to the fantastical realm of Underland and her friends the White Rabbit (Sheen), Absolem (Rickman), the Cheshire Cat (Fry) and the Mad Hatter (Depp), who is not himself. The Hatter has lost his Muchness, so Mirana (Hathaway) sends Alice on a quest to borrow the Chronosphere, a metallic globe inside the chamber of the Grand Clock which powers all time. Returning to the past, she comes across friends – and enemies – at different points in their lives, and embarks on a perilous race to save the Hatter before time runs out. Presented in Digital 3D™, Real D 3D and IMAX® 3D, Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass” opens in U.S. theaters on May 27, 2016.
This is a movie that some will love and some won’t, but isn’t that the way most movies go? Either way you will hopefully get the opportunity to enjoy some yummy movie theater popcorn and a night out on the town.
If you head out to see Alice Through the Looking Glass this weekend, I would love to know if you think I totally missed the mark with this one. Tell me what you think in the comments below……..
