One of the most important things I want to instill in my children is the love of the great outdoors. Luckily for me, living in Colorado that isn’t too hard to accomplish. No matter what the season, there is always something to keep us motivated to head outside and play.
This year, both kids finally reached the age to attempt white water rafting. I have always had a love for rafting, despite a crazy rapid ride I took with my own family as a teenager. You can read about that near death experience here.
Both kids were very nervous when we first arrived, especially after they were given all the instructions about what to do in the event that they fall out of the raft. However, one of my favorite quotes is, “Do One Thing Every Day that Scares You”. It wasn’t always my favorite quote, but as I got older, I stopped taking as many risks. It made life seem a little more boring to me. I want my kids to know that it is okay to try new things (within reason) and not be afraid.
So after a little hand holding and being told mommy would never let anything happen to them, off we went down Browns Canyon on the Arkansas River. I have to say what an amazing journey with my family. Not only were the views breathtaking, but the experience was one we will never forget.
It was my oldest nephew, my mom, myself and my two little ones. After the first rapid, I knew we had made the right decision as my children screamed let’s do that again. The smiles on their faces were priceless, well worth the initial fears they felt beforehand. When the rafting trip was over nearly 2 hours later, my 6 year old daughter said it was one of her BEST days ever!
I know by me telling them to do one thing every day that scares them, it could lead to some not so good choices. I am hoping however, that with their families guidance it will be a quote that simply continues to bring them many moments of happiness that were unexpected.
What is something you have tried lately that was scary, but ultimately brought you joy? I would love to hear about it in the comments below.
