When thinking about taking a vacation with girlfriends, what types of things do you look for? How about something like shopping within walking distance, great local restaurants, adventure and of course, relaxation. Sounds like a perfect girlfriend getaway to me and you can find all this and more in New Mexico.
New Mexico was nothing like what I expected. If you are anything like me, when you think of New Mexico, flat and dry are probably what comes to mind. I’m really not sure why I thought that was what the terrain would be like, afterall, New Mexico is actually considered a mountain state. So much for my knowledge of geography I suppose. As with most states flat areas do exist, however in Santa Fe and Angel Fire the beauty is never-ending.
Angel Fire, New Mexico
We begin our adventure in beautiful Angel Fire, New Mexico at the Angel Fire Resort. The Angel Fire Resort is located in Moreno Valley, where you are surrounded by mountains and trees that create a gorgeous backdrop for any and all adventures.
The drive into Angel Fire Resort is one best taken during daylight hours if possible. The only comparison I can personally make is driving through the mountains of Colorado to Estes Park.
The roads are windy and narrow, but the views are not to be missed. If you are a passenger for the ride, put down your electronics and/or books and take in the beautiful scenery around you. It’s worth it, I can assure you.
As you enter into the quaint town of Angel Fire, New Mexico, you will immediately begin to feel the need to unwind. It’s the perfect 1st stop for taking time way from the fast pace of the city. It is also a great place for beginning an outdoor adventure.
Whether you prefer winter or summer activities, Angel Fire Resort has what you are looking for. Angel Fire Resort is home to Alpine Mountain which contains terrains for all levels of skiers and snowboarders.
- Beginner- 16 runs
- Intermediate- 38 runs
- Expert- 22 run
There is also night skiing/snowboarding available on 50 acres of lit terrain. The resort can answer questions on times and days that night skiing is available.
In case you haven’t been to New Mexico during the winter, be sure to bundle up. During our girlfriend getaway it was extremely cold and we were not as prepared as we should have been. Luckily for us, the resort had several slope-side dining areas that were perfect for grabbing a nice cup of hot chocolate. (Like something a little stronger, they have a full bar as well.)
During the evening we had our choice of several on site restaurants like Legends Grill for a more chill atmosphere or Chianti’s that was slightly more fancy. There were also great locally owned restaurants within walking distance. We really appreciated having the different options to select from during our stay.
While we didn’t have the opportunity to take advantage of summer activities this time around, we hope to make it back soon. Angel Fire Resorts summer adventures include the “#1 Rated Bike Park in the Southwest”, 18-hole golf course and the only Zipline tour in New Mexico. Sounds like some great reasons to head back to me.
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Our next stop was Santa Fe, New Mexico. Roughly a 2 hour drive from Angel Fire, New Mexico it is a quick trip and well worth it.
We arrived to Hotel Chimayo de Santa Fe which can be found in the heart of downtown Santa Fe. Santa Fe is brimming with world-class galleries, museums, and historic landmarks. It’s a great location for exploring the arts and learning about the history of New Mexico.
Hotel Chimayo de Santa Fe is part of Heritage Hotels & Resorts. Heritage Hotels & Resorts are known for supporting cultural causes throughout New Mexico. Each of their locations shares a story through their unique décor and artwork. I love how Heritage Hotels have stayed true to their brand and celebrate what makes their state so special.
Upon arrival we were given a discount card called “Local Treasures” that provides hotel guests 15% off Heritage’s favorite locally owned businesses. These businesses include restaurants, shops, galleries and attractions. It was a great way to help newbies like me find businesses to explore while in town.
The rooms at Hotel Chimayo de Santa Fe were extremely spacious. Our room included a wonderful fireplace that we enjoyed each night and a relaxing patio area overlooking the courtyard. The courtyard leading to the rooms were strewn with dried chilies hanging outside each room and the ambience was that of historic downtown. It was a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere that made me feel at home.
Speaking of feeling at home, as I entered the lobby to head downtown, I noticed a dog in the lounge bar. The Low n’ Slow Lowrider Bar is a super chill bar that serves all types of libations, including specialty drinks made with locally made Santa Fe spirits. I love that customers include not only humans, but furry friends as well.
Santa Fe and the surrounding areas are a sightseers paradise. Be sure to check out the “El Santuario de Chimayo, Food Tour New Mexico, Museum of Spanish Colonial Art and San Miguel Mission to name a few.
Last but not least, you can’t have a “Girlfriend Getaway” without a spa treatment. Or is that just me?
Nidah Spa is located out of the Eldorado Hotel & Spa in Santa Fe. It is the newest of the Heritage Hotels properties and was being renovated when we were in town. Let’s just say that it is going to be an amazing property upon completion.
I was given the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing Chocolate Peppermint Sugar Scrub and Massage that were unbelievable! I seriously smelled so scrumptious that I hated to shower afterwards. I guess you had to be there, but just think Thin Mint cookies and you will have the general idea.
If you don’t take my word on anything else, trust me on this. Book an appointment and enjoy! Every trip, especially a girlfriend trip, deserves a spa day. You can visit their website for pricing and other services available.
New Mexico was nothing like I had assumed it would be, it was better. I am looking forward to the next time I am able to take a trip back and explore more of what the state has to offer.
Have you been to New Mexico? If so, I’d love to hear what you recommend….
A big thank you to Angel Fire Resort and Heritage Hotels & Resorts for hosting us on our “Girlfriend Getaway” trip. All opinions are my own.
