Jonah as presented by the Sight & Sound Theatres in Branson, Missouri has made the majority of shows I have ever seen on stage fail in comparison. It’s a little disappointing, because I love plays and Jonah is going to be a tough act to follow for anything I could see here in Colorado.
If you are not familiar with Jonah, he is a Prophet that struggles with following to obey God’s message to him. Jonah the Prophet had only had the Lord speak to him on one occasion as a young boy. However, he continues to live a good life and pray hoping for another message in time. When he receives the new prophecy from God he resists, because he doesn’t agree with what God is asking of him and flees.
He boards a boat headed for Tarshish in order to get away from everyone that may be looking for him. During this time, God creates a terrible storm at sea and Jonah is tossed overboard by the other men on the ship to save themselves. This is when the story of Jonah gets very interesting, for you see, he is swallowed by a whale and lives inside its stomach for three days.
Now if you think this sounds like an exciting story to read, imagine it being acted out for you on stage with brilliant settings and backgrounds. The Sight & Sound Theatres provides audiences with an unforgettable experience that is sure to be remembered by all who see it.
The design of the props and use of the stage make you feel like you have gone back to biblical times when the actual story took place. When the storm happens, it literally looks and sounds like you are in the middle of the ocean in a great storm. At one point, I thought the large ship on stage would fall off into the audience. Above all else, the ocean scene of when Jonah is swallowed by the whale is breathtaking.
While this is definitely a story that comes from the Bible, I personally think that anyone could and would enjoy seeing it regardless of their religious beliefs. It is done in a very spiritual way that could be well received by anyone attending.
My son who is seven couldn’t wait to get back from intermission to see more. He was actually pulling me back to our seats with excitement for what was to come. The company that puts on this show does their job of entertaining you to the fullest throughout the entire program.
You can expect great acting, beautiful singing, gorgeous backdrops, full use of the stage with lifelike props, live animals being brought through the aisles next to you and so much more. This one is a must see when you are visiting Branson, Missouri! Now through August 30, 2014 the Sight & Sound Theatres are offering a family four pack for just $99. The production itself will be going on through December 31st, 2014.
