Last year my son and I shared an amazing experience of watching a sea turtle lay her eggs on the beach while visiting Jekyll Island. It was such a beautiful thing to watch and something I hope my son will always remember. I was so proud of him as he waited patiently for her to lay her eggs and then make her descent back to the ocean.
He has asked me on several occasions since that trip about what happens to baby turtles once they hatch. I have thought about letting him see a documentary on the little hatchlings, but I decided that could be a little hard on a five year old to watch. After all, we know that the fate of baby sea turtles is not one that always has a happy ending.
When I heard about an animated film called, A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures, I thought that may be a good way to let him see the journey of a sea turtle in a way that was geared towards children. I am so glad that he had the opportunity to see this movie.
Born on a Baja, California beach in 1959, new hatchling Sammy must do what his fellow newborn sea turtles are doing: race across the beach to the ocean before a seagull or crab captures them. Thus begins Sammy’s incredible fifty-year ocean journey. Along the way he meets his best friend, a fellow turtle named Ray, and overcomes obstacles both natural and man-made while trying to fulfill his dream of travelling around the world. Throughout his travels, Sammy never forgets about Shelly- the turtle he saved on his first day and loves passionately from afar. Based on the actual course of a sea turtle’s life, this story of one creature’s breathtaking journey is a thrilling voyage the whole family will enjoy.
We watched A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures on one of our Friday night family movie nights. It was fun to watch together, because my son was able to ask us all kinds of questions as the movie went on.
You are sure to recognize several of the characters voices like Melanie Griffith, Kathy Griffin, Anthony Anderson and Stacy Keach. If you are looking for an enjoyable film that touches on the values of friendship, love and caring for our environment, then check out A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures.
This movie is currently available in a Blu-ray and DVD combo pack for the price of $19.95. It’s the perfect movie to share with your kiddos on Earth Day 2012.
I received a copy of A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures to review. All opinions are 100% my own.
