Who has given you the best parenting advice? Do you think you came into this world knowing everything there is to know about being a parent? I know in my personal life, my mother has had a lot to do with the type of parent I am today.
I learned from my mother not only by her actions as my mom, but also by the advice she offered me throughout my life. It is hard to pinpoint one thing she said to me that influenced my life the most, because I realize now that most everything she said was of some importance.
When I was growing up, it was funny how I thought my parents were the enemy. What is even more humorous, was how I realized when I was older that my parents are quite possibly the best friends I will ever have. Maybe that is why I finally understand the advice my mom gave me growing up, “You can’t be your kids best friend, you have to be their parent first.”
When I was a teenager, the last thing I wanted was my mom to be my best friend. Of course, I didn’t want her to be my parent either. I just wanted to be left alone to do whatever it was I wanted and trust me, I rebelled every chance I got.
It wasn’t until I reached my twenties that things started to change with our relationship. I finally appreciated the person I had become because of my parents. Despite all the troubles and turmoil’s I had put my parents through, they were the ones that had stood by me always. I was at that point able to let them be my parents as well as my friends and vice versa.
The saying, “You can’t be your kids best friend, you have to be their parent first.” makes sense now. It also gives me hope that I can be a good parent to my own children and hopefully one day share the relationship I have with both of my parents.
With Mother’s Day right around the corner, I hope my mama knows how glad I am that she chose to be my parent when I needed her the most. Because of that, she is now my best friend and the woman/mom I will always hope to be.
