I never knew that buying my son a pet rat could be so challenging! It’s a rat, right. I should be able to walk into any Petco or Petsmart and become the new owner of my own personal Willard. Simple…well NOT for me.
I did not know that there were Dwarf Rats, Jumbo Rats, Manx Rats, Long haired rats, Rats with curly hair and that is just the beginning. Did you know you can get a rat with a Pedigree!! No, I am not kidding. The ratteries here in Colorado have wait lists for people wanting a specific rat with specific parents. I am SO confused. I just want a sweet, furry rat for my son to love. (Today they brought out a cage of feeder rats and my husband had to stop me from grabbing the cage and running for the door!)
I have turned into a crazy person, striking up conversations with complete strangers trying to make sure I am making the right decision on what rat to purchase. One thing you should know about me is I can’t decide what to order off of a menu at a restaurant. I am the person that asks the waiter/waitress what they like to eat to decide what I want for dinner. If you were ever a waiter/waitress I was the person you walked away from just shaking your head. I have someone meeting me tomorrow to show me their baby rats and I have emailed her no less than 25 times. (I want a girl, no I want a boy. Which one do you think I should get? Oh just bring them both.) I will be surprised if she even shows up at this point! Anyway, this has been a process, but I want to make sure I find just the right addition for our family.
In my defense, I don’t take bringing new pets into our house lightly. I use to be a dog groomer and have seen too many unwanted pets in my time. Okay, now I am just making excuses for my craziness. I will let you know tomorrow if I become the new owner of my own Stuart Little or if the search continues……Wish me luck, as my little guy is becoming very impatient with his indecisive mommy. 🙁
